Uncompromising Performance on the Racetrack and the Wrist
Porsche Design continues the success story of its cooperation with Porsche Motorsport. As the official timing partner of the Porsche Motorsport GT Team, Porsche Design presents two new versions of the innovative Monobloc Actuator. The Monobloc Actuator Chronotimer Flyback Limited Edition is limited to 251 watches, a direct correlation to the 251 cm wheelbase of the Porsche 911 RSR. Both technically and visually, this chronograph reflects a deep connection to the world of motorsport. The matte-black carbon dial, inspired by components of the GT Team’s racing car, is reminiscent of its color composition: black, red, grey and white. In addition, the function display at “9 o’clock” reflects the characteristic red and white curb design. The technology for the chronograph function originates from the high-performance engine concept of the Porsche 911 RSR. The second highlight is the new Porsche Design Monobloc Actuator 24H-Chronotimer All Black. This watch is equipped with a newly developed titanium bracelet, coated with black titanium-car-bide. Additionally, its new titanium folding-clasp with fine adjustment allows for enhanced adjustability.
The Concept
With the introduction of the Monobloc Actuator Collection in 2017, Porsche Design introduced a highly innovative and entirely new watch concept. To develop this new technology, the watchmakers at Porsche Design Timepieces AG in Solothurn (Swit-zerland) collaborated with the designers at Studio F. A. Porsche in Zell am See (Austria) and the engineers at Porsche Development Centre in Weissach (Germany). The line offers a revolutionary new approach to the operation of a chronograph. The engine of the Porsche 911 RSR racecar, a prime example of performance on the racetrack, inspired this innovative mechanism. Instead of using two standard push-pieces on the side of the case to trigger the stopwatch functions, like a conventional chronograph, the Monobloc Actuator’s chronograph functions are set into motion by a single pressure-operated rocker switch, which is integrated into the case. Similar to the mechanisms used in the high-performance engine of the Porsche 911 RSR, adapted processes provide absolute precision, dependability, and hermetic sealing throughout operation. In fact, the stopwatch function of this chronograph, which is pressure-resistant up to 10 bar, is operational underwater.
The Powertrain
Werk 01.200, introduced by Porsche Design in 2017, serves as a „high-tech engine“ in the 45.5-millimeter titanium case. The chronograph calibre, whose excellent precision rate is certified by a COSC certificate, features a flyback mechanism. In racing, this complex additional function is crucial, since it allows the measurement of successive intervals, for example, with lap times or pit stops. Ticking at 4 Hz, the automatic movement is the result of the brand’s engineering and horological competence and the transfer of intelligent technologies from racecar development. Manufactured using state-of-the-art production methods, it guarantees reliability and precision with every second. The movement’s open-worked barrel bridge implements Porsche’s light-weight construction philosophy, while also offering a clear view of the flyback function and gear train. The energy-optimised rotor, visible through the case back’s sapphire crystal, is PVD-coated and equipped with a weight crafted from tungsten. Though difficult to process, tungsten provides the necessary weight required to guarantee powerful winding.
The Features
Every component of the Porsche 911 RSR racecar – from form to function – stems from an overall sophistication taken by Porsche during design and development. This philosophy is likewise true for the Monobloc Actuator Chronotimer Flyback Limited Edition, for which Porsche Design developed a new rubber strap with Alcantara inlay. This technical material, also used in the interior of the 911 RSR, provides a secure hold, even with high lateral-acceleration. The stabilizing properties transferred to the strap ensure maximum comfort, thanks to the LaserFlex structure. The strap is equipped with a titanium safety folding-clasp and offers an attractive option to metal bracelets. The innovative combination of design, functionality, and technology is reflected in the LaserFlex strap.
Monobloc Actuator 24H–Chronotimer – Excellence Merged With Quality
Porsche Design has been innovating and utilizing titanium since 1980, and the new Monobloc Actuator 24H–Chronotimer is no exception. Debuting in an inventive 45.5 millimetre titanium case, pressure-resistant to 10 bar, its black titanium-carbide coat-ing lends a sporty, enduring quality to the watch. The case surrounds a matte-black dial with a mechanical function display at “9 o’clock”, central chronograph second, thirty-minute counter at “12 o’clock as well as twelve-hour counter at “6 o’clock”. A date window is integrated at “4 o’clock”. The tachymetric scale on the outer rim of the dial enables the wearer to calculate average speed. The 24-hour display is applied onto the bezel. As the watch’s engine, the Swiss ETA Valjoux 7754 automatic chronograph calibre beats at 4 Hz, amassing a 48-hour power reserve. Its personalized rotor puts the Porsche Design icon in the spotlight, as both can be admired trough a panel of sapphire crystal in the case back.
Perfection in Every Detail
Similar to the case design of the Monobloc Actuator 24H-Chronotimer All Black, the new titanium bracelet with black titanium-carbide coating is the result of a balanced relationship between form and function, with an overall focus on comfort and precision. Robust yet elegant, the newly developed and thoroughly tested titanium bracelet is especially comfortable on the wrist, thanks to the specific characteristics of the material. The origin of titanium within Porsche Design dates back to 1980, when it was first used for the titanium bracelet of the Titan Chronograph. Maximum safety and comfort are guaranteed, thanks to the new titanium folding-clasp with fine adjustment.
The Monobloc Actuator Chronotimer Flyback Limited Edition retails for $8,500 (RRP). The Monobloc Actuator 24H–Chronotimer All Black retails for $7,250 (RRP). These new versions of the Monobloc Actuator Collection are available in mid-2018 at Porsche Design Stores, specialty retailers, and online at .
